NIYAH

The ' Pakcik ' skillfully cut the chicken meat into two. He was about to cut it into smaller parts when he suddenly stopped and looked at the chicken for quite sometime. Then, he stood up, went to his "Kancil" and took another bird which looked healthier in appearance and colour but smaller in size. That really fed on my curiosity so I bluntly asked,
" Why change?"
" Change lah cikgu, this one  is not fresh anymore."
Well, actually the one that had been cut up was still ok to me, but the man insisted to sell a fresher bird. Now, that is one good example of  a man with a good heart; doing business not just for the sake of gaining profits but with the right niyah. A true Muslem
The man is actually an imam at a nearby mosque. He earns his living by going round the neighbourhood everyday in his white 'Kancil'(car) selling fresh foods from the wet market.  May Allah swt  Bless You Always Pakcik.

MY SARAWAK MEMORIES

As I lay down on the bed in the hotel room, I stared at the tree which was standing tall outside. It had many branches with small green leaves which covered most of the window panes. Somehow, the tree brought back fond childhood memories.  Years back, when Abah was posted to Kuching, we rented a bungalow situated by the roadside. During the day, I would sit at a window which was facing the main road and waited for the Chief Minister of Sarawak to pass as it was one of the main roads in Kuching. Thinking back, it was kind of funny because it had  become somewhat like a routine for me; as if there was nothing better to do ! Once in a while, I would slip out of the house and went to the nearest shopping complex just to do some browsing of goods! Lucky me, never once  was I caught in the act by my parents! Ha ! Ha! Naughty me!

Now, what I loved most about the house was being in the room  which I shared with my sisters. In my mind’s eye, I could still see it clearly. It was not a big room but it had  large glass windows facing the main road. There was an old  tree just outside the windows. It was a big tree and might have been there for a long time ; judging from its rough and bulky wood as well as its twisted and ‘aching’ roots. However, the tree was never a sore to my eyes.  Instead, the tree provided an enriching night experience for me. At night, before going to sleep, I would gaze at the stars which seemed like glittering lights between the tree branches. On certain nights, the tree was lit by a remarkable display of lights by a congregation of one of  God’s luminescent creatures; the fireflies. It was simply dazzling and offered the most and dearest peace. On rainy days, when it was too quiet and wet to have fun, I would sit beside the window and watch the raindrops falling softly onto the leaves. Sometimes, when the sky was clear, with no stars and glow-worms, I would just lie down, merely watching the tree branches moving gently in the cool night breeze and wondered about the future. Was the future going to be promising? Where would I be ten years from now ?  These thoughts would run through my head and put me to sleep.
Years have passed and  I have found answers to some of  my questions. Nevertheless, these memories will stay with me forever.
